Department of Primary Industries Queensland

Gasapps Australia was commissioned to design and manufacture a unique piece of equipment for a joint initiative between Nordiko and the Department of Primary Industries Queensland. The project required a compact and highly accurate system for the controlled injection of methyl bromide gas into six small test chambers in the order of one cubic meter each.

Prioritising Safety and Efficiency

A major safety consideration factored into the initial client briefing centered around the need to mitigate known, inherent risks associated with previous machines performing similar functions. Historically, these systems presented significant operational hazards for users, as their core engineering and design relied on the use of large, pressurized vats of boiling water to achieve the necessary phase change. This severe risk of scalding and pressure hazards was widely believed to be an unavoidable part of the process.
GasApps Australia challenged this existing paradigm. After careful consideration and innovative redesign, our team successfully developed an alternative that completely removes the need for boiling water. Our solution incorporates a custom-designed integrated electric heater and advanced heat exchange technology. This innovative dry-heat approach presents a risk-free operational environment for end-users, eliminating the primary safety concerns while simultaneously achieving superior thermal efficiency and precise temperature control. We didn't just meet the safety requirements—we delivered a breakthrough that sets a new, safer standard for this entire application.

Core Technology & Automation Features

PLC Programming: The system is governed by robust, custom-developed Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming. This ensures high-speed data processing, complex sequence control, and reliable, autonomous operation with built-in safety interlocks.
Intuitive HMI: User interaction and monitoring are managed via an Omron Industrial Touch Screen Interface. This Human-Machine Interface (HMI) provides clear, real-time visualisation of all system parameters and historical data logging.
Integrated Safety System: For immediate protection, the machine is equipped with a clearly marked and accessible Emergency Stop (E-Stop) button. This is tied into a comprehensive, Alarm System that provides both visual and audible warnings for critical fault conditions.
Mass Flow Meters (MFMs): Integration of high-accuracy Mass Flow Meters (MFMs) allows for continuous, precise measurement and control of gas throughput, ensuring product consistency and efficient consumption monitoring. These meters are critical for automated and customizable features.
